Our findings say that Amla, Reetha, Shikakai, these three herbal fruits might coax you to break up with chemical infused hair care products. That your hair’s been dating for a long time. We think you should give a fair chance to our suggested trio of
- Amla Reetha Shikakai Oil
- Amla Reetha Shikakai Shampoo
- Amla Reetha Shikakai Powder Hair Pack.
Just the way, you have given a chance to the advertisement-driven products that you are using right now. Don’t you think so? If there’s nothing like homemade food, then there’s also nothing like made-at-home, Gooseberry, Soapnut, and Acacia Concinna – hair shampoo, hair oil and hair pack. This might sound exaggerated but we have a valid reason behind saying this…
Why use Amla Reetha Shikakai for Hair?
Here’s why you should apply the rich combination of Amla, Reetha, and Shikakai on your hair:
1) Amla
Though there are many benefits of using Amla for hair but the most important benefit of all is that-
Amla (Gooseberry in English) is said to be one of the berries that contain the highest amount of antioxidants.
Antioxidants can repair your damaged hair cells and can protect your existing hair cells from further damages. Taking care of hair cells is important because from growing hair to graying hair, everything depends upon how your hair cells function. Hence it is important to keep your hair cells healthy and protected.
Even for hair loss/hair baldness treatment through Stem Cells Therapy, the diminishing numbers of hair cells are increased, by injecting stem cells into our head. But why spend so much of money on such treatments, when we are telling you a natural, easy and economical way of increasing the life of your hair cells
2) Reetha
Whereas, Reetha (Soapnut in English) is known to be filled with Iron. You must know that antioxidants are found in three forms. They are:
- Antioxidant Enzymes
- Antioxidant Nutrients
- Antioxidant Phytochemicals
Reetha is known to contain antioxidant enzymes. And for catalyzing the effect of the blessing antioxidant enzymes on hair, iron plays an important role.
3) Shikakai
For the absorption of Iron from Reetha, you will need Vitamin C. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant nutrient. That is found in large quantities inside the hair benefiting from Shikakai (Acacia Concinna in English).
Speaking about Antioxidant Phytochemicals, they are present in all three herbal fruits. This shows that we didn’t randomly pair up Amla, Reetha, and Shikakai together. Hence we suggested this combination to you, for a reason.
How to use Amla Reetha Shikakai on hair?
For performing the 3 crucial stages of hair care, i.e. Oiling, Shampooing, and Conditioning, you should use these 3 herbals fruits, the following way. But before this, know that-
In Indian market you will find Amla (gooseberry), Reetha (Soapnut) and Shikakai (Acacia Concinna) in the following forms:
- Dried Fruit form: The sun-dried fruits of Amla, reetha, and shikakai are usually soaked overnight for making its pulp. This step is commonly adopted while making Amla reetha shikakai shampoo at home, whose recipe has been given here. Otherwise, the same dried fruits are crushed and ground into powder form.
- Powder form:
How to use Amla Reetha Shikakai Powder on Hair?
Amla Reetha Shikakai Powder is commonly mixed into a paste, by mixing it with water, rose water, and milk, etc. To ensure that you optimally derive Amla Reetha Shikakai powder benefits, we will tell which liquid/oil you should mix, while making their pack as per your hair type.
How to Apply Amla, Reetha and Shikakai Powder on Hair?
For its even application, you should try using a hair coloring brush.
Since Amla is edible, Amla Juice can be easily bought. However, till now there’s no such thing a reetha juice and shikakai juice.
Let’s start…
GUIDE:
Suppose we say that use:
Amla Juice + Reetha Powder + Shikakai Powder + Camphor Powder + Rose Water
In Ratio= 1 : 1 : 1 : ½ : 2
This means,
For 1 tbsp of Amla reetha and shikakai powder, add 1tbsp of amla juice, 1tbsp of reetha powder, 1tbsp of shikakai powder, ½ tbsp of camphor powder and 2 tbsp of rose water. Keep on adding all the ingredients in a bowl until you get sufficient amount of the mixture as per your hair’s length and volume.
Stage 1: Amla Reetha Shikakai Hair Tonic Oil
Suitable for: All hair types
Things Needed: Deseeded Dry Amla Fruit + Dry Reetha Fruit + Dry Shikakai Fruit + Coconut Oil
Ratio= 1 : 1 : 1 : 2
Steps to follow:
- Take a large saucepan and fill its half with water. Let the water heat first in medium flame.
- Then take a small saucepan fill it with coconut oil.
- Drop dried fruits of Amla, reetha, and shikakai inside it. Then carefully place the small saucepan inside the large pan.
- Heat the oil and other ingredients in low flame. This is called ‘double boiling’ method.
- Keep on stirring at regular intervals. Heat the mixture for up to 10-15 minutes, until you see bubbles on the oil.
- After that turn off the gas and leave the mixture alone, for the next 24 hours.
- The next day strain it and preferably store the mixture inside a glass/ceramic jar, to maintain its freshness for a long time.
How often to use? On a night before shampooing, always massage your scalp and hair with this oil mixture. Even on non-shampoo days, you should oil your hair a bit.
Stage 2: Amla Reetha Shikakai Hair Shampoo/Cleanser
Suitable for: All hair types
Things Needed: Deseeded Dry Amla Fruit + Dry Reetha Fruit + Dry Shikakai Fruit Pods
Ratio= 1 : 1 : 1
Steps to follow:
- Soak dried fruits of Amla, Reetha, and Shikakai in water, at night.
- Since the fruits are dried, they will be lightweight too. Hence some of them might even float on water. Your job is to see that, all the fruits are completely dipped in the water.
- The fruits must be kept soaked, for at least 8 hours.
- Then in the morning, heat the solution for up to 20 minutes.
- Pour all the solution into a blender and then run it at its minimum speed.
- We need a pulpy texture, so don’t blend it for a long time.
- Strain the solution now. Press the remnants to extract its juice.
- Then wash your hair with it.
How often to use?Use it on Wednesdays and Sundays. We mean, use it whenever you plan to wash your hair.

- At first, on low flame heat Amla Juice and Olive oil together in a pan for up to 10 minutes.
- Add reetha, shikakai, and Brahmi powder in the same. See that you get a semi-solid sticky texture after mixing. Stir and heat the mixture for another 5 minutes.

Maybe you don’t, but we know very well that you are better off without the chemical infused hair products. Still, we don’t understand why you love buying those chemicals who doesn’t even love back your hair. If this is not true, then tell us why you seem to have certain complaints with your hair. Hi Namrata,
Thanks for your beautiful words.
How long does it take to have really thick hair if the above mentioned shampoo is used?
Hi Keer,
It depends on your hair health and your current situation.
I think you should first try it for 1-2 months, then if you see any visible signs then you should continue it.
And it will take around 4-6 months to really reach your goals.
Thank you so much for your reply. It has been two months since the time I have used it. I can feel new roots and can also feel the thickness. It actually works.
Can u please tell me single pack for dry and brittle and for hair loss?
Hi Ramya,
Sorry, but there is no single pack for 2 problems, that’s why i has given several options to choose from.
If you want solution for both problems, you can try them in alternate time.
Like first use hair loss pack and then hair pack for dry and brittle. This option can give you results for both.
Hope it helps.

This is an amazing process as I have been using this all my childhood .. just have a quick query – Can we make the pulp of all 3 ingredients and store for a week ? As this is a lengthy process and especially if you are working women gets difficult. If storing is possible shampoos can be avoided completed evening during washing on weekdays 🙂
Initially my mom use to take all the trouble but now after me being married have to manage all by self.
Hi Monica,
Yes, you can store it for a week without any problem.
Hi..
How long can we use the made shampoo. I made mine 4 weeks back it’s still there. Can I still use it.
First check it by smelling it. If it isn’t smell like normal then don’t use it.
Otherwise, you can use it.

Hi Jyoti,
I read your article and loved it. Planning to try it. But I have Amla, Reetha and Shikakai in powder form, How much proportion should I take each of them if I need to make hair tonic oil and shampoo from these powders. If you can tell me the measurment in tablespoon and cup it will be a great favor.
Thank you for sharing this useful information with us.
Hi Asra,
If you don’t have these 3 in fruit pod form, then you can use them in powdered form.
Talking about quantity and proportion, use can take 2-3 tablespoons of each of them.
As, you will be using it for first time, test whether this quantity is sufficient for your hair or not?
Hope it will help.

Thank you.
For Hair greying/white hair, you have mentioned to use Heena. Is it really necessary to use Heena ? I personally dont like color of hair after applying heena, i want black hair. can I use only tea instrad of Heena. Is mixure of Amla, reetha and shikakai itself soaked in iron vessel is not sufficient to solve this problem?
Hi Khyati,
Yes, if you don’t like heena then you can remove it from that.
I have the problem of hair loss and dandruff flakes I consulted the doctor as well but it is of no use as all the treatment is temporary. My friend asked me to boil in meduiu heat the powder of amla retha and sekhakai it will help in curing flakes of dandruff. So my question is will it be good to reduce my dandruff and itch. ???
Hi Sunny,
The only option you have is to try it out, As all of them are natural herbs, so it won’t give you any side effects.
You can try it out the see the difference yourself.,
I tried it 1 time yet the good thing about my hair is that whatever i apply on them they show sudden results from the first wash they look soft there is a change and now i will wash today for second time . I took i litre mustard oil heat it up and then made a powder of amla retha sekakai at home and mixed all these into oil cooked for several minutes when the powder became black i strain it and put the oil in to bottle for use after it came on room temperature
Will share more changes if i observed or felt. 🙂

Hi jyoti. If I wash hair with Ritha shikakai and amla shampoo, do I need to use conditioner after?
Hello , I just read the article and it seems very informative. However, before coming through this I had already heard about the above ingredients so since a week I am using it on alternate days. I’ve taken Amla, Reetha, shikakai (all powdered forms) kalonji, vitamin E capsules , coconut and caster oil with water. And made a mixture of all above.
Shouldn’t be a problem using it this way? Or it has to be used in the specific forms as you explained?
I like using the amla, reetha, shikakai shampoo, but the only problem is that it totally dries out my hair – hair feels like straw after use ..what can I do for this? I still want to continue using these natural ingredients

Can i use normal coffee powder that is available like nescafe or bru etc.?
I’m just reading this after seeing someone use Nutsoap and I find this very informative. But I kinda find myself scratching my head with the measurements. For instance, the shampoo. It says 1:1:1 but I’m not sure if that’s one tablespoon or one of each fruit and for the silk and shine I’m not sure if I’m to use one egg or 1 tbsp of egg white. So that’s where I’m confused. If it’s possible can you clear that up for me please. Thank you.
I have dry frizzy curly hair. What would you recommend to tame the frizzy hair.
